My Health interview with Lauren Graham

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Now that March is winding down, I realize that I forgot to tell you about my recent interview with Parenthood’s Lauren Graham for the cover of Health magazine’s March 2011 issue! So…guess what? We chatted. I laughed a lot. And I wrote about it. Here’s a taste of my interview. You can read my full interview with Lauren Graham on the Health site:

Now, I’ll get back to watching Lauren on Parenthood, which may officially take the top of my “favorite show to find on TiVo” list these days. Enjoy the interview!

HEALTH Magazine names The Dating Optimist a “Blog We Adore”

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

It’s a great month for The Dating Optimist, the blog I run to provide small doses of love and life positivity when you really need it. Pick up the Jan/Feb 2011 issue of Health magazine, and you’ll see that my blog was named a “Blog We Adore” for the issue, and featured a quote from the blog archives. Hilariously, it was from a posting called “Dexter and You: Take Your Leap of Faith.” Nothing like finding comfort in life from the character of a serial killer!

But you know what? That’s precisely the point of my site, The Dating Optimist: Positive life messages can be found in the craziest places, sometimes. And I want to do my part to help you work on your focus to find them all around you. Joy and optimism can be ours if we make the choice to use it.

So thanks Health magazine, I adore you right back!

Two Big Cheers for Health

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

This month, the September 2010 issue of Health magazine is a new redesign and a thick juicy issue full of great stuff. I’m proud to say that two of my stories hit the issue this month.

First is my sort of “Call me crazy that I don’t like to vacuum naked” essay on what makes some people “naked types” versus people like me, who sometimes sleeps in flannel pajamas with a wool hat and socks when it’s cold out. I can’t show you the whole story as it’s not up online yet, but if you want to read the whole piece (you should!) perhaps this “Let me Google that for you” search will pull it up.

Also in the issue, my cover interview with Molly Sims, the model, actress and now jewelry designer. We had a very chill chat at the L.A. SoHo House, which I know believe can claim the best view of Los Angeles. Guess I need to start sidling up to some other members so I can roll in there more often. Here’s the first spread of the piece, which you can read on that link above to the magazine’s web site.

Hope you enjoy both stories as much as I loved writing them!

Try: The Attitude That Attracts Love!

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

If you haven’t yet snagged your copy of the Women’s Health September 2010 issue, I’ll help guide you to the best story in it. Which, oh look, just happens to be mine! Well, I think it’s pretty good anyway.

My story, “The Attitude That Attracts Love” is an important reminder for singles that nothing is more important than feeling good about yourself and your life and passing along that great energy on your dates.

Oh, Do I Value My Sleep…

Monday, May 17th, 2010

I love the piece I wrote for the Real-Life Health Diary in this month’s Health magazine.

I wrote it for all of us who have had a moment pretending we weren’t sleeping, or even lie and say we don’t sleep because putting our head on the pillow has somehow become a symbol of wasted time, a sheer luxury. Me? I don’t buy it. I work hard to get my eight hours and I explain why. Click on the story below, or here to read “Since When Did Sleep Become a Luxury?” on Health.com:

Hope you enjoy the story, and…sleep tight!

Secrets of a Real Optimist

Monday, July 6th, 2009

It’s always good to talk to someone who shares my optimistic viewpoint on life and love and everything in between. I found that when I spoke with Star Trek and House star, Jennifer Morrison for the July/August cover of Health magazine.

Here’s page one, for a taste of the article. You can read the whole interview in the July/August issue, or head to Health.com to see what she had to say.

The “Bones” of Green Health Tips

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

A couple of months ago, I interviewed Bones star Emily Deschanel for the cover of Health magazine.

The “Absolutely Organic” interview appeared in the April 2009 issue. I was very impressed with how planet-conscious Emily is—she’s someone who hates to order takeout because the food comes in plastic containers. As if I didn’t feel guilty enough when I order three meals and two appetizers from the Chinese Szechuan place…just for myself.

Suffice it to say, I learned a few things from her during our talk, and I’m sure you will, too. You can check the whole story out here, at the Health interview with Emily Deschanel, or you can read it here, below.

Well, I hope you find some of that “absolutely” helpful. :)

My Article…Improved By A Friend!

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

I mentioned a few posts ago that I wrote a short piece for Health magazine about Lori Loughlin’s health tips, all of which were useful and wise when it comes to staying healthy and losing weight. But my friend Todd Bush—best friend, hairdresser, writer—doesn’t have “staying healthy and losing weight” on his radar so much. When we get together, we order chicken parms with a side of fries and oversize beers. So I had to laugh out loud when he read my story and then emailed his own hungry take on her tips, which are worth reading for a laugh.

Lori’s story, as told by me…

Todd says…

“I have my own strategies you might be interested in.”

Make the most of my time: If I cram the food in my mouth fast enough I have time left over for seconds.

Don’t go it alone: If I gorge myself dining with other people I don’t feel like such a pig.

I’ve got a secret weapon: Sleep. If I sleep off a big meal I’m somehow able to eat all over again the moment I wake up.

Forget the word ‘diet’: I did.

Pass the asparagus: To the person next to you instead of putting any on your plate so you have more room for meat and potatoes.

Snack for energy: And for a million other reasons. Snack snack snack.

My anti-aging secret: Eat lots of greasy foods so it makes the skin oily reducing wrinkles.

At home skin savers: Your Mom’s awesome soap!

He’s right. My Mom does make “awesome soap,” which at this point is not for sale. Other than that, however, I can promise you that while Todd’s tips definitely won’t help you lose five pounds, you’ll live a darn happy, funny and full-filled life doing them!

Health Secrets from a Hot 40-Something

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

I’ve got another story on the newsstands if you’re the old-school type like me, who still enjoys grabbing a magazine and a cup of coffee (or, in this case, a cup of antioxidant green tea) and curling up for a good read. In this month’s March issue of Health magazine…

…you can see my interview with Lori Loughlin of 90210 (and formerly of Summerland, and formerly-formerly of Full House, where she played Uncle Jesse’s lovely girlfriend).

Lori has a few great ideas, and you can find them all on the back page. And considering that she’s 44 and looks like a college senior, we mortals would be wise to pay attention to her tips.
